“Everything is so expensive, what can I do that is affordable and fun?” That is a question that goes into every college students mind, because college students are busy saving up for there tuition and they are not working because they need to focus on school during the semester. However, what they do not realize is that they get a lot of discounts with their student ID card. While you may think that the student ID will only get you into anything school related; not many people know that there are a lot of discounts know that there are discounts that you can get with your student ID that are off campus, and not school related. The types of discounts you can get with your student ID can be anywhere from clothing stores, movie theatres, and transportation discounts.
- Movie theatres:
One of the most common discounts that most people may not know about is that a lot of movie theatres give student discounts. The main reason some people do not know about it is because a lot of the movie theatres do not give student discounts. I know the Regal Cinema in MacArthur mall has student tickets for seven dollars on Thursday nights.
Therefore, if you have nothing to do on a Thursday night, or you just want to take a study break, get a group of friends together and go see a movie. With the amount of movies out you are bound to find something that everyone enjoys. Also, because you will be at the mall if you get there super early it is no big deal because you can walk around the mall and get something to eat. There is nothing better than watching a movie to get your mind off the stress of school. While Netflix is great, sometimes it is better just to get off campus so you are not feeling guilty about not working on a paper while you are on your computer, and sometimes you just need to get off campus and away from the campus. My best friend and I did this a few times last year, and it was a great study break, there is nothing better than a little bit of bonding time, as a way of taking a study break.
- Norfolk Zoo:
Another popular discount is that the Norfolk Zoo allows Old Dominion University students in for free with their student ID card. What else is there to do on a beautiful spring day with no classes? Going to a park is fun but it gets boring after a while, because you are always doing the same thing. The pool does not open until after Memorial Day, so what do we do until then? Here’s an idea why not go to the zoo and see animals that you never see! Even if the pool is open, you can go to the Norfolk zoo instead of the pool, especially since it is free to ODU students. Also, lets be real, what are you going to do on beautiful days when it is too cold to go to the pool? For more information, and to plan your visit to the Norfolk zoo, go to: http://virginiazoo.org.
- Clothing and Retail stores:
Are you worried about spending money but you feel like you need new clothes, or you just want to have a shopping day? No need to worry, because there are some stores that offer student discounts if you show them your student ID. These discounts range anywhere from 10 to 20% percent off your total. Charlotte Russe, Urban Outfitters, Steve Madden, and Goodwill offer a 10% discount with a valid Student ID Banana Republic, Madewell, J-Crew, H&M, and Levi’s all offer a 15% discount on all full priced purchases with a valid student ID. And Ann Taylor offers a 20% discount on your full priced order. There are many other stores that offer astudent discounts if you show them your student ID. If you decide to have a shopping day with friends then visit these stores, and bring your student ID.
- Student Advantage Card:
Do you want to go home for a weekend? Do you have a way of getting home? If you do not have a ride, let Amtrak or Greyhound take you there! I know that taking the train or a bus can be expensive, but if you are over the age of 16, and a full or part time student you can purchase the student advantage card and get a 20% discount every time you purchase a train or bus. It only costs $20 dollars to purchase the card. You will end up saving a bunch of money in the long run. My best friend needs to take the train whenever he goes home on breaks, and he told me that it is so much cheaper with the student advantage card.
- Amazon Student:
This is a membership exclusively for college students. With Amazon student you get 6 months of free amazon prime membership along with free two day shipping. I save a ton of money on textbooks, because it is cheaper than buying textbooks at the University bookstore. After 6 months of free prime membership, you get amazon prime membership for 39.99 a year while you are in college. You get emails about deals and promotions, and you get four free kindle books every month. The best benefit of having an Amazon Student account is that for every person you refer to amazon student you get ten dollars. Therefore, not only do you save money, you can also earn money by getting an amazon student account.
In conclusion, if you are a university student, bring your university ID to any place off your campus, whether it would be to the movies, the mall, or even just to get food bring your student ID. With all the discounts that are mentioned above, there are several more discounts that places offer to students. Therefore, you never know if you go to a place that offers student discounts, so it would be easier to carry your student ID anywhere you go.
